Once upon a time, there was no night or day in this world. There was only some steady dull light so that everyone could see, but it did not change as we see it changing from morning to night and again morning today.
In that time, there was a village in which all the women had children but one. She wanted children badly, but all she could do was watch sadly as others gave birth to many children, but she could not. The other village women teased her and insulted her. They told her that she must be evil. "You must be a terrible person to have been punished like this," they said to her face and she wept.
At last she heard of a medicine man who could make a woman have babies simply by touching her belly with the palm of his hand. She walked far and long to find him. At last she came upon him in a far away land.
Tearfully she narrated her story. "I can help you," he said kindly, "but first you must wait a little while. I am given babies to bring into the world. I also know what kinds ofbabies they are. But right now, I only have bad souls. There is no reason why you should be cursed with a bad baby. Wait till there is a good one for you."
The woman could not bear to wait any longer. The medicine man was unable to tell her how long it would take. The woman who had been waiting for a child for so long, could not bear to wait another day. "Any baby is better than no baby," she pleaded. Seeing her impatience, and seeing that she would not let him rest till he helped her, the medicine man sadly consented. He rubbed the palm of her hand on her belly. Instantly she felt a strange sirring within her and knew that she would soon become a mother.
She rushed home joyfully and in due course delivered a baby boy. However, she soon realized that the little infant had a bad temper and cried constantly; but she had seen worse children, and reminded herself that at least she was a mother now. A little crying could always be endured.
The boy grew as all children do, but he became more and more evil. He began killing small, helpless animals and tormenting other children. As he grew into a young man, he delighted in hurting others and bringing misery to all those around him. No one could do anything to change the wicked boy`s nature.
The evil boy procured a charm from a magician and decided that he would kill everyone who was trying to change him. Among other things, this charm would protect him by causing darkness so he could hide if need be. He began by killing the magician.
He hurried back to his village and began to attack one an all. The villagers were terrified, but the boy went on a killing spree without any mercy. Helpless and at their wits end, the villagers finally sought the help of an old woman in the neighbouring village who was known to work magic charms. She heard the story of the poor agonized villagers and decided to help them fight the evil boy. She said she had a charm would expose enemies by making a great deal of light, He would use his charm to cause darkness; she would use hers to cause bright light.
So back and forth they battled with their magic, until one day after many years both of them died.
But now that the old woman, the evil youth, and the magician were all dead, no one knew how to use the charms. The village people pondered for a while about what they should do, until the village headman decided that they should do nothing at all.
The charms are still working against each other, to this day, causing day and then night and then day again in an unending sequence.
