On 11th October at the age of 52, the life was snuffed out of Christopher Reeves. But Superman will go on forever.
Christopher Reeve was the star of Superman movies until a near fatal riding accident in 1995 confined him to the wheelchair for the rest of his life. He had become an icon for children with his feats of Superman , the action hero . After the accident he became an icon for people the world over as he played superman in real life too. As a quadriplegic ( someone who has multiple disabilities) each day was a struggle to survive.
Reeves was born in 1952 in New YorkCity. He was the son of an English Professor and his mother was a journalist. Reeve was a student of the Julliard school in New York City and later graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
While still in college he made his first appearance on television in a soap opera called Love of Life. In 1976, he played the well known actress, Katherine Hepburn`s grandson on Broadway in "A Matter of Gravity". `Fifth of July` was another show in which he starred. He is, however, best known for his Superman films.
The accident in 1995 left Reeve paralysed from neck down. Breathing itself was a problem , leave alone acting . But the strength and will of the comic hero Superman seemed to seep into the actor and his will and determination to survive against all odds saw him gradually recuperate.
A man of steel, after the accident, Reeves was unable to even breathe
He wrote a couple of books, "Nothing is Impossible- Reflections on a New Life" and "Still Me" on his life after the accident.
